Chrysler Herbarium’s Bryophyte collections (Mosses, Liverworts and Hornworts) contain specimens from prominent historical collectors such as Elizabeth Britton and Erica Frank, as well as contemporary collections by Kerry Barringer and Blair Young. The collection contains many species of Sphagnum due to the large number of taxa found of that genus within the state. While the collection contains specimens primarily collected during the mid-1900s, nearly each moss species has a representative from the 1800s as well.
Chrysler Herbarium’s bryophyte specimens are primarily unmounted (although some are mounted to cardstock) and stored upright in envelopes in storage drawers. The liverworts, hornworts, and mosses are organized phylogenetically, with genera and species arranged alphabetically within each family. The whole collection is digitized but only the front of the envelopes and their labels have been photographed, so to see the actual specimens an in-person visit is needed.
