Hours of Operation: by appointment only
The herbarium is an active research unit and is accessible to the public, researchers, Rutgers employees and students for research or educational visits by appointment only. All tours and visits must be organized in advance by contacting the staff of the herbarium.
Research visits: Scientists and other scholars working on projects in the fields of botanical systematics, ecology, conservation, and evolution, ethnobotany, anthropology, art, and medicine, and other areas of inquiry are welcome to make an request and appointment for a visit (dependent on staff availability). Current herbarium uses are for research and educational purposes, no commercial endeavors. Research on endangered plants might be restricted. Contact us in advance to make arrangements for research visits and to get additional information about rules for research in the herbarium.
Tours and events: Guided tours in the herbarium can be arranged for school classes, botanical and conservation groups and societies, garden and nature organizations, and classes from Rutgers University. We can also host workshops and talks on how to press plants and other botanical topics. All tours and events are organized on a case-by-base basis and dependent on staff availability. Accessibility:The herbarium is located in the basement of the Biological Science Building which does not have handicap accessibility (e.g., no elevator or stair lift). Access to the herbarium requires the use of stairs from the first floor to the basement level. Restroom facilities are on the first and second floors; there are no restrooms available at the basement level.
Herbarium regulations for all visitors: No live plant material is allowed in the herbarium. All herbarium material being brought into the herbarium should be pest free and be frozen for at least 48 hours (within 1 week prior to arrival) or can be frozen when brought to the herbarium.
No food or drink is allowed in the herbarium. There are shelving and coat racks outside the herbarium door where food and drinks may be left temporarily.
