Seed plant collections include Angiosperms (flowering plants) and Gymnosperms (cone-bearing plants) and make up the majority of specimens in Chrysler Herbarium. We have especially large holdings of Asteraceae, Ericaceae, and Poaceae. Due to activity by botanists from Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York, the collection includes many historical ballast specimens from New Jersey ports from the late 1800s and early 1900s. The collection continues to grow through donations of specimens and through contemporary collecting by students, local botanists and researchers.
The seed plant specimens are mounted on herbarium sheets and stored in folders within sealed metal herbarium cabinets. The angiosperms are organized according to the APG III system. Within each family, genera are arranged alphabetically, and within each genus, species are also arranged alphabetically. Within a species with many collections, specimens might be further organized in folders based on country and state, and/or counties within New Jersey (alphabetically by NJ county). Folders with New Jersey specimens are sometimes marked in green on the spine. Type material is stored in red folders and currently separate from the main collection.
