Chrysler Herbarium has an especially rich collection of fern, fern allies, and lycophyte (Pteridophytes) specimens due to the work and collections by James D. Montgomery and David Fairbrothers.
The pteridophyte specimens are mounted on herbarium sheets and stored in folders within sealed metal herbarium cabinets. They are organized according to the PPG1 classification system. Within each family, genera are arranged alphabetically, and within each genus, species are also arranged alphabetically. Within a species with many collections, specimens might be further organized in folders based on country and state, and/or counties within New Jersey (alphabetically by NJ county). Folders with New Jersey specimens are sometimes marked in green on the spine. Type material is stored in red folders and separate from the main collection. The whole collection is digitized.
