The Chrysler Herbarium Army began January 2016 as a unique internship opportunity for Rutgers University students. This internship program has since then trained over 200 students and volunteers in herbarium curation and digitization techniques. Thanks to our amazing students and volunteers, we were able to completely digitize our herbarium collection as of 2024!

Interested in joining the Herbarium Army?! This is an opportunity to get experience in working with a real scientific natural history collection in the Chrysler Herbarium at Rutgers University. A herbarium is a collection of dried and pressed plant specimens from many parts of the world, like a library of snapshots of once-living species and ecosystems.
You can apply to volunteer or work for credit but, need to commit a minimum of 60 hrs. for volunteer and 84 hrs. for credit work for the semester, on a regular basis. We provide training in a variety of museum collections-based topics. You can develop skills in collections management, taxonomy and nomenclature, photography, databasing and digitization, geo-referencing, and curation and repair of historical plant specimens. The herbarium is located on Douglass Campus in New Brunswick. Students with majors related to ecology, plants systematics and biology are preferred, but not a must. You do have to be careful, meticulous, and interested in plants and science. Hours are by arrangement. Please see the application materials for details.
Please download the application and submit your application to Collections Manager, Megan R. King (megan.king@rutgers.edu).
